ON THE SAM MAZZA FARMS STAGE:

1:00 - 5:00 pm: Peg's Kitchen Vermont Strawberry Demos

Peggy ThompsonPeggy Thompson's Strawberry Demontrations are being presented for the first time at the Chew Chew by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture during the height of Vermont's Strawberry Season. Peggy grew up in the farm hills of East Corinth where much of her life in the summer revolved around the farm and farm activities.

Her family grew and produced everything needed to provide for the family's needs. There were no weekly trips to the grocery store, which was at least 12- 27 miles away. "We would spend the summer planting, weeding, and then the harvesting of the produce. Our meats were raised, butchered and frozen right on our property. Everyone had a job on the farm," says Peggy. "Typically the men were in the fields and in the barn and the girls/women tended to the garden, cooking and preserving. There was a time that a bag of peas or beans underneath the big maple tree in the hay field served as the best babysitter."

"We would typically freeze peas, and some fruits. Freezing would be in plastic containers that were bought in bulk. The vegetables would be canned in quart jars and put into the pantry. We would start with the rhubarb at the start of the season, continued through the pumpkins and tomatoes. No jar would be left unfilled and the shelves would be filled to capacity. At a very young age we were expected to ready the vegetables for canning. Weeding, picking, sorting, cutting and jarring were all within the description of getting the produce ready."

"I have my own personal experience of about 30 years of growing, preparing and preserving foods for home use. I have tried and true recipes, the Ball cookbook as my preserving guide. Creating safe, homegrown, well preserved foods for my family is the best experience that I have."

Peg's Kitchen Vermont Strawberry Demos will offer a rotating series of programs each afternoon sharing Peggy Thompson's expertise in the preparation of Strawberry Jam, Strawberry Rhubarb Jam and Strawberry sauce.

5:00 - 8:00 pm: Coconut Grove Steel Drum Band

Coconut Grove Steel Drum Band

Scott Paulson and Barbara Smith deliver the islands to you with their Caribbean Steel Drum, Coconut Grove. The joy these two find in performing music comes through in their upbeat style, whether they are performing traditional Trinidadian steel pan tunes, or calypso and pop favorites.

Their show consists of Scott on lead tenor steel pan, and Barbara on double second pans. They play over background accompaniments which the pair have painstakingly recorded for this purpose. The result is a full lush sound created by only two people. These Steel Drum wizards are a longtime favorite with Chew Chew audiences and are making a welcome return by popular demand. Scott and Barbara both hold B.A.'s in music and perform all ver New England out of their central Vermont home base.

2:30 - 4:15 pm: The WDEV Radio Rangers

The WDEV Radio RangersThe "WDEV Radio Rangers" take you back to WDEV's beginnings in 1931. Live country music bands appeared on WDEV, as well as other local and regional radio stations in the 30's and 40's. The "Rangers" are a return to those "thrilling days of yesteryear" when radio was more than a jukebox ... when real country music was performed live on early morning or Saturday evening radio shows.

The WDEV Radio Rangers' program has been on the air every Saturday morning at 10:30 since 1986 on both WDEV AM 550 and FM 96.1 . Their sponsored broadcasts are recorded "live" in the WDEV studios located in Waterbury, VT and are in the tradition of those original radio pioneers. The WDEV Radio Ranger are making their debut performance at this year's Green Mountain Chew Chew Food & Music Festival.

4:30 - 6:30 pm: Rick & The Ramblers Western Swing Band

Rick and the Ramblers

Rick & The Ramblers Western Swing Band will perform songs and stories from their newest album, "I Rode The Ti" at the Chew Chew. "I Rode The Ti" sports 12 songs, six written by Rick, recounting Vermont experiences like riding on the last voyage of the Ticonderoga, a 220 foot sidewheel steamboat built in 1906 and moved two miles overland in 1955 to the Shelburne Museum. One of Rick's tunes from the CD, "A Grill, A Bumper Four Headlights and a $50 Bill," received national airplay on NPR's "Car Talk" in October and is being featured on the upcoming Car Talk CD, "Car Talk Car Tunes Volume 3; Stairway to Heapdom."

"This homey CD just screams "Made in Vermont" thanks to songs celebrating the old Lake Champlain steamboat Ticonderoga and driving the entire length of the state on U.S. 7. Rick Norcross' weather-worn voice and vocalist Taryn Noelle's sweet sounds make for a nice opposites-attract pairing. ...Brent Hallenbeck, The Burlington Free Press.

"...every song sounds like a classic... brilliantly produced... narratives that celebrate Vermont culture and history" ... John Pritchard, Seven Days.

"I am especially proud of your commitment to promoting the music of Vermonters. Like the Ticonderoga, it is very important to the culture and history of our state" ...Senator Patrick Leahy.

Rick & The Ramblers deliver high-energy western swing classics, original Vermont tunes and massive servings of musical fun. With an all-star lineup of Ramblers and a fully gassed up 1957 Flxible Starliner tour bus, Rick is ready to take every audience to a Vermont place that doesn't exist anymore. A place where dance halls abound, the music swings and life was so much simpler. Rick & The Ramblers Western Swing Band will perform 10 concerts throughout the region on this summer's "I Rode The Ti" tour, including five Vermont State Parks bringing their spirited western swing sounds to the most beautiful real estate in all of Vermont.

Rick & The Ramblers Western Swing Band is Rick Norcross, vocals and Guitar; Taryn Noelle, vocals; Doug Reid, fiddle; Buck Maynard, lead guitar; Charlie MacFadyen, accordion and piano; Dave Rowell, vocals and bass and Brett Hoffman, vocals and drums.

Rick & The Ramblers Western Swing Band are sponsored on their 2009 tour of Vermont and the region by 98.9WOKO, Citizens Bank and Vermont State Parks.

6:30 - 8:30 pm: The Slant Six Swing Band

It all started in January 2001 when Heidi, Londog, John, Doug, Brett and Gary thought that this band would be a good idea. They're still at it, so they must be doing something right. In fact, under other names, and with other songs, some of the Slant Sixers go back over 35 years together--Yikes!

But it hasn't slowed them down…they're just getting comfortable. They still play a finger poppin' mix of swing guaranteed to please. The repertoire includes Classic Swing music such as "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Jump, Jive, and Wail" to Western Swing music like "Bump, Bounce Boogie" and "Only Make Believe". Season to taste with a waltz or two, some torch songs to cool things off, as well as some surprise favorites, and this band will bring just the right mix to their debut performance at the Green Mountain Chew Chew Food & Music Festival.

Variety is one of the Slant Six Swing Band's strong suits… both in song choices and instrumentation. An evening spent with the Slant Six Swing Band will treat the listener to vocal harmonies, saxophone, violin, trumpet, keyboards, guitar, pedal steel guitar, flute, harmonica and more. All supported by an outstanding rhythm section.

Slant Six Swing Band is Gary Lotspeich, Bass; Doug Reid, Violin; John Young, Piano, Harmonica; Heidi Walsh, Vocals; Lonny "Londog" Gustafson, Pedal Steel, Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Saxophone, Trumpet, Flute, Congas, Slide Whistle and Brett Hoffman on Drums.

1:00 pm & 3:00 pm: The Jim Atkinson Blues Band

Jim Atkinson Blues Band

One of the Chew Chew's favorite blues artists and a ten time Chew Chew performer over the years as the leader of the Boston area-based West End Blues Band, Jim Atkinson brings his "power trio" formed in 2008 to this year's Chew Chew.

Backed by a crack rhythm section of bassist Brian Rost and former WEBB band mate Larry Takki on drums, the band delivers a spicy stew of electric blues, rock and roots music that will have you headed for the dance floor.

2:00 pm & 4:00 pm: The Blue Gardenias

The Blue GardeniasJust as sweet as a bouquet are the three-part harmonies of Vermont's Blue Gardenias: Juliet McVicker, Taryn Noelle, and Amber deLaurentis.

In addition to performing originals, their repertoire crosses through jazz, country, and rock, with standards such as "Mood Indigo," "Sweet Dreams," and the Beatles' "Things We Said Today." This floral - or, shall we say, choral - arrangement is truly unique because of what each lady brings to the table.
